CONSUMER LEAGUE FOR ECONOMIC AUTO REPAIR

ABOUT CLEAR

In response to impending legislation, increasing insurance rates, and growing news coverage concerning the safety and financial impact of automotive repair, a group of consumers have joined together to form CLEAR, the Consumer League for Economic Auto Repair.

CLEAR is a consumer advocacy group dedicated to ensuring that consumers have access to safe, affordable repairs.  CLEAR believes that competition is key to ensuring consumer rights in the automotive repair marketplace.

In recent years, the car makers have stepped up their campaign by actively lobbying government officials and the media to restrict the availability of aftermarket repair parts  to consumers.  Both car company and aftermarket part manufacturers bring quality, fully warranted parts to the marketplace. In the majority of cases, the only difference is the price paid by consumers and in many cases the aftermarket part has a better warranty than one from the car company. Aftermarket parts are typically 20- 50 percent less in cost from the corresponding car company part.  Adding to the confusion is the repair process itself. Many of today’s vehicles require computer diagnostics that are often controlled by the manufacturer, limiting the choices consumers have for repair facilities or do-it-yourself repair.

CLEAR wants to make sure consumers not only understand their options when it comes to repair, but that they have choices in the repair process.
